Beyond the Badge: The Tearful Tale of Onybuchi Anele’s Tragic Encounter

Onybuchi Anele, a father of one, tragically lost his life after being allegedly shot in the face with a teargas canister by a policeman in Abuja. This event highlights the ongoing issues of police brutality and the urgent need for accountability within law enforcement agencies.

Incident Overview

On May 22, 2024, while returning from work, Anele was involved in a minor accident with a motorcyclist (okada man) and his passenger. After ensuring they were unharmed, Anele continued his journey home to Haj Estate. However, shortly after, policemen arrived at the scene and insisted that Anele follow them to the station, despite the accident victims having left without any complaint .

Escalation and Tragedy

Eyewitness accounts reveal that an argument ensued when Anele resisted the police’s demand. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a policeman firing a teargas canister directly into Anele’s face at close range. Severely injured, Anele was rushed by his church members and neighbors to Kubwa General Hospital, and subsequently referred to the National Hospital. Despite their efforts, Anele succumbed to his injuries around 8 a.m. the following day  .

Public Outcry and Demand for Justice

A heart-wrenching video showing Anele’s family praying for him as blood gushed from his face has since gone viral, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice. This tragic event not only underscores the brutal reality faced by many Nigerians but also emphasizes the urgent need for systemic change within the police force.

Following the tragic, the police authorities have taken swift action by detaining the officer responsible for the incident. 

FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, stated, “In response to the tragic unprecedented incident that resulted in the untimely demise of Anele of Byazhin Abuja on May 22, 2024, at about 9:45 pm, the commissioner of police, FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, directed the DC Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.”

The commissioner of police, CP Benneth Igweh, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the public, condemning the unprofessional conduct of the officer. He assured swift justice for the family and the public affected by this tragic event.
