Congo’s President Tshisekedi Calls for Sanctions Against Rwanda

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi urged the international community to impose sanctions on Rwanda for its involvement in destabilizing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Tshisekedi highlighted Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which has fueled a humanitarian crisis.

He stated that the resurgence of M23, backed by Rwanda, had displaced over 7 million people within the DRC. UN experts estimate that 3,000 to 4,000 Rwandan troops are currently in Congo, collaborating with M23, which has been engaged in conflict with the Congolese military for a decade.

Tshisekedi also called on the UN to intensify efforts to combat terrorism in Africa, emphasizing that terrorism, particularly from groups like ISIS, is gaining ground on the continent.
