Kenya’s Unhealed Wounds – Amnesty International Demand Justice for Protest Deaths

Amnesty International has called on the Kenyan government to investigate the deaths and disappearances of protestors during demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year.

Human rights groups report that over 60 people were killed during weeks of unrest, with many more disappearing in the aftermath. The protests, led primarily by the youth, were sparked by a controversial finance bill proposing tax increases on an already struggling population. Amnesty, in a petition submitted Wednesday, included evidence such as videos and interviews from witnesses, lawyers, and healthcare professionals.

The organization accused security forces of using excessive force, identifying specific firearms used by the police.

Recently, grieving mothers in Nairobi gathered to demand justice for their children, who were either killed or went missing during the protests. Despite the gravity of the situation, there has been little investigation into the actions of the security forces.
