The former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after months of evading arrest.
Bello is facing 19 counts of money laundering, accused of diverting over N80 billion from the state’s treasury during his time in office.
The former governor has been involved in a series of legal battles to avoid facing the charges, including seeking a transfer of the case and challenging the EFCC’s authority.
Despite his efforts to evade justice, Bello finally surrendered to the EFCC on Wednesday, accompanied by high-profile individuals.
“The former governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process.”
With Bello now in the custody of the EFCC, the long-awaited trial can proceed. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
