The Lagos State police command has released at least 22 individuals who were arrested during the #EndSARS memorial protest held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the Lekki tollgate. The protest, which aimed to honor those who lost their lives during the 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations, was met with heavy police presence and resulted in the arrests of demonstrators, including the event’s organizer.
The protesters gathered early Sunday morning to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the movement against police brutality, specifically the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Four years ago, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets to call for an end to police violence, with the Lekki tollgate becoming a focal point after security forces allegedly opened fire on peaceful protesters on October 20, 2020, killing at least 12 people, according to an Amnesty International report.
This year’s memorial protest focused on demanding the full implementation of the judicial panel reports that were set up to investigate the incidents of 2020. Protesters expressed frustration over the lack of action taken on the findings, calling for accountability and justice for the victims of the 2020 shootings.
Despite a peaceful intent, the protesters were blocked from marching through the tollgate by security forces, and several individuals were detained. The police intervened shortly after 8:30 am, dispersing the crowd. However, by the end of the day, the detained individuals, including key organizers, were released.
The #EndSARS movement continues to resonate across Nigeria as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for justice, police reform, and greater accountability from authorities. Though the government disbanded SARS in 2020, protesters argue that little has changed in terms of systemic issues within the police force. The memorial event highlights the ongoing demand for change, as Nigerians continue to push for reforms in the face of adversity.
The 2024 #EndSARS memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the lives lost and the long road ahead toward justice and comprehensive police reform in Nigeria.
