Paris 2024 Investigative Committee Begins Hearings in Abuja

The Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics Investigative Committee, established by the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, held its first hearing in Abuja on Thursday.

The committee, led by veteran journalist Mumuni Alao, aims to address Nigeria’s underwhelming performance at the games. The session, which took place at the MKO Abiola National Stadium’s Media Center, saw the appearance of key figures, including the Minister himself, Permanent Secretary Tinuke Watti, and Federation of Elite Athletes Department Head Bamiduro Olumide.

The committee will delve into several issues, including the omission of athlete Favour Ofili from the roster, doping concerns, and the alleged contract between Actively Black and the Nigeria Olympic Committee. The behavior of Team Nigeria members will also come under scrutiny.

The committee consists of seven members representing different regions, with Victor Okangbe serving as secretary.

The Minister emphasized that the committee members were chosen for their integrity and independence, ensuring an unbiased investigation.A previous post-game audit, which involved key stakeholders from the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Paralympic Committee, and sports federations, laid the groundwork for this investigation. Minister Enoh expressed hope that this review will help Nigeria avoid the mistakes of Paris and improve future Olympic performances.

Despite a significant financial investment, Nigeria failed to win any medals at the 2024 Olympics. The last time this occurred was during the 2012 London Olympics. While the Paralympic team secured seven medals, including two gold, the overall performance fell short of past achievements.
