Pelumi Nubi, a 27-year-old British Nigerian travel content creator, has accomplished a remarkable feat—she is the first Black woman to travel solo from London to Lagos by road. Her journey, spanning over 10,000 kilometers and 16 countries, culminated in her arrival at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where she was celebrated with a vibrant festival and named the brand ambassador of tourism in Lagos state.

Setting off on January 24th, Pelumi embarked on this epic adventure in her trusty purple Peugeot 107, which she affectionately named ‘Lui.’ Her journey was not without its challenges, as she encountered a terrifying accident in Ivory Coast that damaged her car. However, this setback did not deter her from continuing her mission.

One of the most interesting challenges Pelumi faced was navigating the borders within Africa, where she encountered issues with bureaucracy, bribery, and corruption. Despite these challenges, Pelumi remained undaunted, driven by her passion for travel and her desire to inspire other Black women to embark on their own solo adventures.

Throughout her journey, Pelumi documented her experiences on social media, sharing glimpses of the stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and warm hospitality she encountered along the way. She also emphasized the importance of connection, always seeking out physical SIM cards in each new country to stay connected with locals.

Pelumi’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. Her story is an inspiration to all, encouraging us to challenge ourselves, step out of our comfort zones, and embrace the unknown. As Pelumi herself puts it,

“You can never be 100% ready. Just set a date and go for it.”
