Royal Rumble: Court Halts Emir Sanusi’s Reinstatemen

Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement has been halted by a court order, intensifying Kano’s political turmoil. Governor Yusuf’s efforts to reverse past changes face legal and social challenges as the state’s stability hangs in balance.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Federal High Court in Kano has issued an ex-parte order preventing Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. The court also halted the implementation of a new law abolishing the four emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano. This decision, delivered by Justice Liman, emphasizes the need to address constitutional and jurisdictional issues raised by the suit filed by Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba-Dan Agundi  .

Governor Yusuf had announced the reappointment of Emir Sanusi shortly after signing the Kano Emirate Council (Amended) bill into law. The governor argued that this move would promote unity and socio-economic development in Kano, stating,

“The return of Emir Sanusi will propel peace and prosperity and restore the lost glory of the state and its rich cultural heritage” .

However, the court’s injunction aims to maintain the status quo pending further legal deliberations .

Former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero

Amidst this legal tussle, the Kano State government faces another challenge. Former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, who was deposed by Governor Yusuf, was allegedly smuggled into Kano in an attempt to reclaim the palace forcefully. In response, the governor ordered his immediate arrest, accusing him of creating tension within the state. This directive, however, is now in limbo due to the court’s intervention  .

The Federal Government’s involvement has also drawn criticism. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar condemned the Tinubu administration for deploying security forces to support Aminu Ado Bayero’s return to the palace. Atiku warned that such actions could destabilize Kano, a state known for its historical peace and harmony. He stated,

“The deployment of soldiers in extra-constitutional matters such as this undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military” .

As the situation unfolds, the implications for Kano’s political and social fabric are significant. The court’s next hearing on June 3, 2024, will be crucial in determining the future of the emirates and the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi. For now, all eyes remain on Kano, watching how these developments will shape the state’s journey towards unity and stability.
